When looking for a new Sports Utility Vehicle, you can be forgiven for having high standards. After all, with so many reliable manufacturers out there competing to bring an ever-higher standard of rugged performance combined with in-cabin luxury to the market, drivers really are spoiled for choice. But when it comes to tried and true brands, Jeep really is the first name in utility sports.

And they don't come much more quintessential than the Jeep Cherokee.

Getting to know the Jeep Cherokee

Since its inception in 1984 the Jeep Cherokee (the world's first unibody SUV) has been the embodiment of the brand's values. Jeep places freedom and authenticity at the heart of everything it does. And by combining outstanding performance with superior off-road capability, Cherokee drivers have the freedom to explore our great nation without impediment. And the Cherokee's rugged yet sleek good looks, reliability and uncompromising emphasis on utility are about as authentic as it gets.

But can it tow?

The Cherokee comes with a range of different engines to meet the performance needs of its drivers. All of which have robust towing capabilities. Whether you need to tow a broken down hatchback or a luxury camper, you're sure to find something in the Cherokee range to suit your needs.

For your convenience, however, we thought we'd save you having to dig around for the right data and provide a full breakdown of each Cherokee engine's towing capabilities;

Cherokee drivers have a choice of three engine options. There's the 2.4L Tigershark Multiair 2, a 3.2L Pentastar V6, as well as a 2.0L Turbocharged Inline 4-Cylinder and a 3.2L Pentastar engine.  The 2.4L Tigershark engine provides a 2,000-pound maximum tow rating.  The 3.2L Pentastar engine, also has a standard tow rating of 2,000 pounds as well but this can be greatly increased when equipped with the Trailer Tow Group or the Tow Prep Package which increases its maximum tow rating to 4,500 pounds.  Adding the Tow Group or Tow Prep Package to the 2.0L Turbo engine makes it able to handle towing capacity of up to 4,000 pounds.

Jeep Cherokee towing features

So, what's included in the Tow Group and Tow Prep Package? The Tow Group includes extra features like a 7 and 4-pin wiring harness, an auxiliary transmission oil cooler, and a class II receiver hitch. The Tow Prep Package means a larger radiator, alternator and transmission oil cooler to reduce the strain on the engine caused by towing heavy loads.
