Safety Recall S27042216: Monostable Gear Selector

April 22, 2016

FCA US LLC announced a safety recall on certain 2014 and 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2012 through 2014 model year Chrysler 300/Dodge Charger vehicles equipped with a monostable gear selector and an 8-speed automatic transmission.

FCA US has determined that the existing strategies built into the above vehicles to deter drivers from exiting the vehicle, after failing to put the transmission into "PARK", have not stopped some from doing so. FCA US has therefore determined that the absence of an additional mechanism to lessen the effects of driver error in failing to shift the gear selector into "PARK" prior to exiting the vehicle constitutes a defect presenting a risk to motor vehicle safety.

A driver that wrongly concludes that the vehicle's transmission is in the "PARK" position may be struck by the vehicle and injured if he/she attempts to exit the vehicle while the engine is running and the parking brake is not engaged.

FCA US will conduct a voluntary safety recall to update the vehicle's software to include an additional feature to lessen the effect of driver error in failing to properly shift the transmission gear selector into the "PARK" position prior to exiting the vehicle.
