The 2009 Jeep Compass is a mid-size SUV that seats five passengers. Although there are downsides to the Compass compared to it other Jeep siblings, this is one Jeep that puts safety at the forefront, and its standard features are varied. The Jeep Compass is priced affordable for buyers on the budget as well.  With 21 city MPG and 24 highway MPG, the Compass is the most fuel efficient mid-size 4WD SUV on the American market. The five-passenger crossover is far from the traditional Jeep, the absence of low-range gearing and its low ride height meaning it's far better suited to pavement than dirt.  However, the optional "Freedom Drive" can send up to 60 percent of the engine power to the rear wheels in the event of reduced traction up front.  The Compass comes in Limited and Sport trims

Driving the Compass
As far as handling goes, the Compass lacks the overall refinement of competitors such as the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4. The Compass and Patriot are Jeep's first models with four-wheel-independent suspensions. The brand's other SUVs retain a solid rear axle, which offers advantages in some off-road situations.  On the road the 2009 Compass is comfortable and stable and easily absorb most road imperfections.  Compasses have adequate power, but modest reserve power demands careful planning before passing or highway merging. The Compass is a bit slow in acceleration, going 0-60 mph in a lackluster 9.3 seconds.  Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and 18-inch aluminum wheels are also included on the base model.

Power for 2009
A 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard on the 2009 Compass. Manual transmission is standard. While it only reaches 172 horsepower, the variable valve timing allows the model to conserve on fuel. Available on the front-drive Sport with the CVT is a 158-hp 2.0-liter 4-cylinder.

Jeep Compass Design
The Compass exterior has a swooping profile up top, but the lower half is still quite boxy. While some are attracted to the Compass's unique flair, others will certainly be put off by its individuality. The doors have matching moldings that dress up a deliberate accent groove. All models have black mirrors and door handles, not body-colored.  The 2009 Compass is 173.4 inches long and 71.3 inches wide; that's about the same as the Escape, but the Element is shorter.  The optional RALLYE Group provides 18-inch alloy wheels with performance tires, a body color kit, bright exhaust tip, driving lamp and spoiler. The present-day Compass was inspired by the 2002 Compass and Jeepster concept vehicles. It exhibits a sleek, sophisticated and expressive styling and appearance.  A performance-oriented Rallye Packages is available with its own character and aggressively style.   The sporty Rallye Package distinguishes itself with body-color fascias and assertively positioned driving lamps. Enhancements range from the rear spoiler to the rear stabilizer bar and combine a tricked-out look with purposeful performance.

Safety Excellence
Safety features take center stage with the Compass which features an Electronic Stability Program, a Sentry Key Theft Deterrent System, and multi-stage front airbags. The Electronic Stability Program uses the ABS brakes and Traction Control to determine the proper pressure to apply to the brakes and can also control the amount of torque. This specialized program can prevent loss of control and possible rollovers. The security system will immobilize the engine if a break-in is detected.

Inside the Compass
The new for 2009 interior includes upgrades to the instrument panel, door trim panel, and center console to go along with chrome accents, a removable carpeted load floor, and illuminated cupholders. Features include leather-trimmed seating, heated front seats, CD player with MP3 capabilities, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, and power windows and locks. The Compass' CD player allows passengers to sync their MP3 player with the vehicle's audio system. A tire pressure monitoring system is also included, which provides a digital readout in the instrument cluster that continuously supervises each tire's pressure and alerts drivers if a tire has too much or too little pressure. Also featured are remote keyless entry, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an auxiliary power outlet.  The driver seat is height adjustable on most versions.  Visibility to front corners and over-the-shoulder is impeded by thick roof pillars and to the rear by tall headrests. Interior dimensions are rather large for the segment, coming in at 123.5 cubic feet of passenger volume, which beats the competitors by a good margin. Cargo volume, though, comes in at 22.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 53.6 cubic feet with the second-row bench folded. That's less cargo volume than both the Escape and Element.

Summary
The Compass Limited's unique exterior accents and swooping contours give it a prime-time attitude that stands out in a crowd.  Compass Sport's unique exterior style supports a timeless, purpose-built design. Sport's exterior design elements include Black door handles, roof rack side rails, and 17-inch Cast-Aluminum painted Sparkle Silver wheels.  For another take on the Compass check out Edmunds.com review.  The Jeep Compass is very different from the traditional off road capable Jeep we all know.  But the Compass does have some very strong points that make it a desirable vehicle.  Priced at around $17,715, the Compass is one of the most affordable mid-size models on the market. Though its power is mild, its fuel economy is impressive. Buyers in search of an SUV with safety as its highest priority will find that the 2009 Compass fits the bill.  All in all it is perfect for a small family vehicle or a daily commuter.
